Cameroon’s culture is a fusion of the traditions and customs of the indigenous, ethnic people of its surrounding region. 
Gillette’s (or GiGi’s) connection with her ancestors and their traditional beauty rituals began when she was a child. She was always fascinated with the women of her village. They were always able to maintain beautiful healthy hair, without the use of harsh chemicals. This was a direct contrast to the images GiGi was surrounded by in the Western Hemisphere. She wanted to find the “Secret” of the women of Cameroon, to share the wonder with the women of the African Diasporo.
“This was not so easy to do,” says GiGi. “Our elders and healers are reluctant to share their secrets. You are seriously gage and tested on whether or not you are trustworthy.”
In 1996, The Gillette Leuwat institute of Natural Hair and Skin was established, specializing in the treatment of natural hair and skin care for both men and woman. Gillette Leuwat’s products use 100% natural ingredients including: oil-based tropical fruit, milk plant, aloe, earth and mahogany.
The products were originally developed for the restoration of Black (African) hair in order to maintain or regain the natural texture of one’s hair from birth (which is a mixture of curly, wavy and straight). In addition, the

Gillette's products have attracted interest from major manufacturers and cosmetic companies, internationally. L'Oreal-Paris has inquired and wants to know Gillette's miracle.
“There is no 'miracle,” GiGi says. “It is knowing the Earth, being in touch with the Ancestors and respecting tradition.”
