Not one, but two excellent archival Versace moments — plus custom Brandon Blackwood, fresh-off-the-runway Brandon Maxwell, and more.

The 2023 NAACP Image Awards didn’t just celebrate Black excellence — it was also an opportunity to showcase some incredible looks, ranging from fresh-off-the-New-York-Fashion-Week-runway to archival Versace and Prada.

Tracee Ellis Ross and stylist Karla Welch plucked one of the best looks from Brandon Maxwell‘s Fall 2023 show less than two weeks ago, while Thomas Christos Kikis and Law Roach dug into the Versace archives to bring back two iconic gowns for Gabrielle Union and Zendaya, respectively. (“Circus” 1989 haute couture for the former, Spring 2002 haute couture for the latter. Zendaya then changed into Spring 1993 Prada.) Serena Williams commissioned Brandon Blackwood to make her black velvet dress, and Sheryl Lee Ralph had Ghanian brand Pistis create a regal kente gown.
